Onion Barge-e

A few of us arranged last night via the West Mids Geocaching group on Facebook to meet up to do a brand new & first series by caching partner Jules from the Bedfords. So today Mr, Mrs and Ben BCC were all out caching with Tony (All-Weather-Cacher), Dave (The Strangler), Lee (rowley104) and Neil (thornicus).
We met at 9.30am on the Crown pub carpark and after saying hi to all and getting booted up, we were on our way.

A2BG by thebedfords

http://coord.info/GC3C639

A series of 9 caches along the Worcester - Birmingham Canal, between Alvechurch and Barnt Green. Most of the caches are nice, straightforward hides and good for all cachers including geo-kids, there are also a few that require a bit more effort.

An old bridge.

The weather was a bit nippy at first but it soon turned out to be yet another beautiful morning. Infact perfect caching weather (just like any other weather).
I was quite happy to find the first cache of the day as it was obviously the first cache under my belt hidden by my caching partner Jules....it was a great cache too.
We carried on to another fab one which I am sure will get many favourite points, you will know where its going to be but will still have to find it.

The next one is one of my regular exploits.....climbing a tree....NOT!
Well before I could do anything Tony was up the tree so I had got away with it  so I opted to retrieve the mouse part of the cache which is the one to tell you to  climb higher, I did redeem myself however by climbing up the tree to put the actual cache back because I am not a wuss!!!!
Another fab cache.

Don't look down Ian!

The next cache was a nicely camo'ed one that is a little different and we were all delighted that Neil found this one as he feels that he is not a very good cacher, he proved himself wrong here. Onto the last one up the North part of the canal and a nice sized one for the kids. We have only done 5/9 caches so far and they already have something for everyone.

We bump into more Caching addicts - The Cuthies!

So we walk back the way we have came to do the southern section and find another nice sized container which will keep the kids happy and on the way to the next one we spot some caching buddies The Cuthies but without their dog Max, we had a few minutes chat in the sunshine while this well hidden cache was found.

So just 2 caches left with great company, I/We are very lucky to have so many caching friends.
My little man Ben found the next one which was another sneaky hide and then we made way to the last one.
On arrived at almost GZ I recognised where I was, I had found a cache of Butttercups only a few months back not far from this one, but we did have a quick check for that but it must be archived.
The fab hint gave Tony a quick find.

We then took a few group shots before Lee left us and we did another cache that myself and Dave had already got before.

The traditional leaning group shot.

Right it was time to head back, Kate fancied a beer at the pub and Dave had to get home..... so Neil, Tony and myself popped off to bag a nearby multi and then joined Kate and Ben in the pub.

A fantastic first series by Jules and family and well recommended from us.

We bagged 9 out of 9 for the series

After having a quick snack and a pint it was time to head off home, where we bagged one more on the way back.

Total smilies for day = 11

Chorley Circular

Myself and caching partner Jules of the Bedfords had planned to go and have an easy day caching around Stourport on Severn but while she was on the way to my house a nice circular of 33 caches was published.
As soon as she turned up I asked her if she was tempted and being the "Number Cruncher" that she is her eyes lit up, so I whacked the gpx files on to our Oregons and we headed off for Chorley near Burntwood.

Chorley Circular by andycpuk

http://coord.info/GC3CMNK

A 6 mile walk around the Staffordshire village of Chorley. The walk takes you along quiet country lanes and public footpaths. Paths are generally well signposted and are used regularly so can be muddy in places. You may encounter some farm animals along the way.
A total of 33 caches including a Bonus cache. The Bonus cache is on a short detour from the main route, you will find the co-ords for this one in a few of caches in the series.

We saw the cars of Allun (Shropshire Seekers) and Angie (Witch24) parked up by cache number 1 but we parked up by cache number 9 and then worked backwards through the numbers.

Another sunny day.
There were lots of varied containers on the series and some nice hides too, the walk was very nice with lots of nice scenery and the bonus of sunshine. We only had problems finding a couple of caches and even needed a PAF off Angie for one of them.
On the way round we bumped into caching partner Shan (the Griswalds 'n' dogs) & Allun (Shropshire Seekers), we spotted each other from a distance as they were doing the now famous Badger Dance.

Caching twins?

We had a good 20 minute chat mainly about how nice the series was and trips in the future. We then bid eachother goodbye for now and carried on.
It only seemed like 5 or 10 minutes later that Shan phoned me saying thank you to me for placing a fake cache which she found thinking it was the real one hehe, no doubt she will get her revenge soon.

Logbook from fake cache. "The Punisher" being the nickname Lou & Shan gave me.

A little later on as I was standing in the middle of the road with Jules, showing her a great feature to use on her new Oregon, we noticed a car approaching us which contained caching buddies Angie (witch24) & son Mike (a0004uk)...they also had in the car Ghost House Three, another cacher to have the pleasure in meeting.
We had quick geochat before another car forced their departure

We struggled at number 14 and had to PAF Angie which we were a bit gutted about as it was a great cache and then the next cache was in a fab area.

Loved it here.

With just a couple left now it wasn't long before we were back at car, to drive nearer the bonus....which we forgot about doh. We bagged that one and then went for number 32 which we had also missed, this was our favourite of the series and a great way to wrap up a brilliant days caching.

Enville FTF-ing

I had been chatting to Neil of team Maxtrev regarding some caching and himself and Maxtrev junior were up for the FTF chase. Neil very kindly offered to pick me up so I took him up on the offer.
The destination was Enville but just as they pulled up 2 other caches were released a bit nearer but in a different direction, we decided to go for these first:    venture 1 Malthouse lane by adventure-4x4 We parked up close and walked the last few yards and made an instant find, we also claimed the FTF on it. Just as we finished logging us in we met up with Paul of Soapy Chickens who informed us that he had found the other. We had some geochat before heading off to Enville.

Enville by Fairview Hunters

http://coord.info/GC3CH0B

The Enville Series brings you to a lovely part of English country side. It starts and finishes at the village green. Its only a 3 mile circular walk with 11 caches but the C/O Rob will be extending it. The first part (clockwise) is Bridleway and then a bit of country road so no problems on a bike. After this the route is along footpaths so only walkers allowed.

We opted to park up at the Widgley Road cache and walk a loop and do the Village Green as a drive by afterwards.
As I know the C/O and the fact that 10 of the 11 caches are handmade and fantastic I won't be saying much about them.
We managed to FTF 7 of them, with second on 3 and also 1 DNF.

This series is very highly recommended by everyone who has been so far and is very easy going. We didn't see much of the area as it was all done by torchlight but we do know that it is a very nice area.
Thanks Rob for the great series and to team Maxtrev for the lift and the company.

We found 10 out of the 11 caches with 7 FTF's from them.

Ironbridge capers

The day of the Ironbridge Gorge event as arrived so may as well do a spot of caching beforehand. Ash ([Monki]) and Graydon (ka-rb) had arranged to meet me at the serices just off M54 as Mrs BCC was dropping me there. I jumped in the car with Ash and we set off for Ironbridge.
Whilst on the way I received a notification of a new cache published in Ironbridge so I guess we could head there first after parking up.
At the car park we met up with Shan (the Griswalds ‘n’ Dogs) & geodog Tia, Shan was in her new pink motor.

We all got booted up and made our way to the newly published cache. We really struggled here and it probably took us 15 - 20 minutes until Ash managed to bag a joint FTF for us all....YAY!
We then moved on down by the river and bagged another one before going to the bridge to meet up with other cachers.

Team WMF for the day.

Shan had volunteered herself and me to take some cachers on a trail and she had chose the most demanding one haha. We knew all the cachers except for annie&jack, with us there was Ash, Graydon, Tony (All-Weather-Cacher), Lou and twins(TheHorde), Sarah & family (Saza36) and Allun (shropshire seekers).
We handed out a sheet with coordinates for 9 caches of which were due to be published....so a bit of a headstart.
We bagged a multi cache on the way to our destination.

Lloyds Coppice by Severn Gorge C Trust

http://coord.info/GC38PDC

Lloyds Coppice is a key component of the landscape of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site and provides a sweeping, heavily wooded backdrop to the northern slopes of the Gorge.
The Coppice is a very lovely place which is pretty much in it's natural state, infact parts of it are very Jungle like haha. As long as you are sensible and watch where you are walking between caches 4 and 7 you will be fine. Due to the nature of the terrain no buggies will get to these parts.
There are 9 caches in the series plus 1 other in the Coppice.

We started off at number 8 as it was the easiest and nearest to start from, we had our first bit of a scramble up a slope to get to it but get there we did.

The first find of the Lloyds Coppice caches.

The next few were pretty straightforward as they were close to paths. but after we did an extra cache on the route we had to take steps up to the top. It was really nice in this Coppice and we were all having a really great time, we carried on walking noticing a big drop to the left of us and that's where we needed to be. We kept walking and ll of a sudden all we could do between caches 4 and 7 was follow the needle as there were no paths.

Big smiles from Ash & Sarah

I love this sort of caching as it is totally not the norm and every single one of us thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We had fun battling through the undergrowth, climbing up banks and sliding down them, thankfully no injuries.

Feel the lurve x

Our experience in the woods had come to a quick end and some of us decided to carry on up the river and then cross by Tar Tunnel and walk back down.
We bagged 10 out of 10 caches and 9 out of the series of 9 were Pre-published FTF's!

Ash, Lou and the boys, Tony, Graydon and myself carried on and bagged all the caches on route, also  taking in this earthcache which was interesting The Tar Tunnel of Coalport

Hmmm interesting!

Bill and Ted getting tired.

Posing for the Earthcache photo.

It was a shame the Tar Tunnel museum was closed as it looked really fascinating, thankfully Tony was a bit wised up on the area so gave us a bit of history.
We then crossed the bridge and strolled back down river picking up all the caches on the way.

At the Ironbridge we crossed back over the river to attend the event.

So the highlight of the day was meeting up and chatting friends old and new. This was a fabulous event and great end to a lovely day in Ironbridge. Angie (nozi parkerz) did a fantastic job as always.

It was nice to catch up with everyone and chill after the walk. Some were having the carvery which looked and smelled really good, but I just settled for a couple of beers. A raffle was also held to help raise money for the Mega event in the Midlands in August 2013.

Windy Cotswolds

My caching partner Jules of the Bedfords picked me up today at 7am for our planned trip to the Cotswolds. Todays weather is much milder than what we experienced last Saturday down Swindon.
We bagged a couple of drive bys on our way and were soon at our first port of call - Snowshill.

Snowshill Scramble by Griff Grof

http://coord.info/GC3BRJV

Snowshill Scramble is a series consisting of 24 caches (with another 9 close by), set over a picturesque walk of just over 7 miles in the Cotswolds, taking you through villages of Snowshill, Stanway and Stanton.
There is only one stile, making the walk dog friendly, and there's only a couple of kissing gates.

Church in Snowshill

We parked up on the National Trust car park and got booted up ready for some lovely hills.
On our way to the first cache of the series we passed another cache so decided to grab that one, which was nice and easy. It was pretty quiet in the village and it wasn't until cache 2 that we saw the first muggle of the day - a lady trying to control 2 horses in distress.

The start of the walk was mainly uphill through some nice country lanes, but nothing to bad. At around cache 3 it was pretty muddy making the uphill task a little trickier, but we were in no rush. Next came the lovely woodland with the loud hammering noise from a water pump.

Lovely

We struggled a little on number 7 until Jules came up with the find and we carried on in the woodland.
We were out of the woods by number 10 and into the village of Stanway. I think cache number 11 should have posed some problems but fortunately it didn't.
The walk carried on then through some lovely parkland, along Cotswold Way and into Stanton. There was a cache here which wasn't part of the series. It was an old telephone box converted into an information kiosk, well the cache was inside herebut we needed a PAF from Ash [Monki] to find it.
The village has some lovely stone cottages.

The next cache as had a fair few DNF's on it and its not hard to see why, but fortunately I was on the ball with this one and found it on the floor. The walk then took us uphill again to a cache named after a local Architect, Sir Philip Stott. We took a bit of a breather here as it was a nice area to sit down.

Is this what you are looking for?

Jules taking a breather!

The walk up here is pretty hard going now as it started to throw it down with rain and as all Geocachers should we put our waterproofs on. We carried on along Cotwolds Way and across the top, where it was pretty exposed to the winds and driving rain and had all the info we had obtained to go for the bonus. Unfortunately there was supposed to be a padlock on bonus but it was no longer there.
Next we slowly descended back into Snowshill and back to the car for coffee.

All in all it was a superb walk with some nice varied caches.

We bagged 32 out of the 32 smilies attempted.

We moved on from Snowshill to another series but a lot shorter this time, we did 2 of the series as drive by's and then parked up.

Kildanes by Griff Grof

http://coord.info/GC2K1W4

On the walk you will walk through a stunning valley, lovely views from a part of the walk known as 'The Scrubs', and theres a nice woodland walk to finish. There were no cows/bulls on the walk but a few horses. Please note the walk has three unfriendly dog stiles.
The Kildanes series is a pleasant, short 2-3 mile walk with 9 caches in the series. There are also 2 other caches on the walk but one of them needs solving beforehand.

Jules just leaving home.

This was an easy walk with easy finds on route. We passed lots of Hunt riders on the way who often said hi to us. We had to backtrack a little to pick up a cache which Jules solved last night.
Congrats to my caching partner on bagging her 800th cache today.....woohoo Go Jules!!!

Caches bagged 11 out of 11.

Well that was fun and our caching day almost over, apart from 1 drive by on the way home.

I can see Cleobury now the rain has gone

I spent today in the lovely town of Cleobury Mortimer, yet another place that is close to my heart. I parked up behind the High Street and met up with Jules of the Bedfords, for a change haha.

We started off doing a cache under scrutiny of CCTV in hope that it would be easier. Fortunately it was easy but can see why other cachers didn't like doing it. We then carried on down the high street to start on a small series.

Brakspear's River Rea Ramble by SPIKE09-123

http://coord.info/GC1JYPQ

A series of 12 caches along the River Rea and The Jack Mytton Way, with another cache a small diversion away. These are a variety of sizes from magnetic nanos to small. The micro and small caches contain log books, pencils and small swaps. The total distance to do all 12 is around 5.5 miles, mostly on public footpaths, a small portion on quiet country roads - caution is still needed ! This is a fab walk for geohounds but remember it is farming land - please keep your dog on a lead when around livestock.

Is that a bridge? nope it's a fallen tree!

We  started at number 12 as it was on the high street and then made our way to number 1.
This was a nice peaceful series but 2 of the caches  numbers 4 and 7 claim to have bonus caches , but there are no such caches published, they are both Nano's  with coords in for a tupperware container with logbook......So really they should be multi's rather than trads.

In front of the ford.

The weather was good and walking was pretty easy going, now we are off to the Cafe for a warm drink each and I had a bacon, sausage and egg sandwich......yummy.

We bagged 13 out of the 13 available here.

We sat on a bench while I ate lovely sandwich and drunk coffee, while Jules drunk her tea.... we then headed off to do a walk on opposite side of road consisting of 3 caches.

Cleobury Country Wanderings by SPIKE09-123

http://coord.info/GC1E6BT

A short walk  of 3 caches through open access land near the River Rea. Some stiles not very dog friendly. There is an egg farm near Cleobury Wandering 3 where you can buy free range eggs.

All the caches were found no problems and the walk was really enjoyable with some nice scenery along the way, infact we sat on a bench for a good while just listening to river flow and taking in scenery while Jules scoffed her lunch.

View from a bridge

Follow us chicks hehe

Well eventually we moved on back towards the car walking through a field of lots of new friends hehe.  3 out of a possible 3 caches on this walk.

Total caches found today = 17.

Just time for one

Well I was hoping Geohatter the reviewer would be publishing some new caches tonight and thankfully he released one a few miles away in Romsley.

Micro With a Twist 6 by bailey rangers

http://coord.info/GC3C62Z

This cache was an unknown so work had to been done. Information had to be taken from the listed coords from 2 plaques on a bench and Heritage sign, you then had to work out the coords and head to GZ for the final stage, but as always with Bailey Rangers caches there is a twist enabling it to be an unknown rather than a multi.
While I was gaining some of the info required at stage one, by caching buddies and FTF rivals turned up....firstly AdamandBeckyChater and then team Maxtrev. We completed all the rest together and after the twist we soon had cache in hand or so we thought, it turned out that it wasn't the final cache but confused us that there was a logbook in.
I returned  days later with Jules of the Bedfords and made the find after a hint from maxtrev.

On the edge

Over Facebook this morning, Andy (Citrus-Lizard) and myself arranged to meet over Kinver Edge and do a few caches over that way. Kinver Edge has always been a special place to me as it reminds me of when I was a nipper and used to visit there.

7 On the Edge Series by whitewesties

http://coord.info/GC17MPJ

A series of 3 caches (formerly 7) going over the top of the Edge, there are also 3 more caches on the route. Terrain is not too bad but a fair ascent to get up there from nearby car parks. This area really is stunning, great views and lots of trees.

Cool tree!

Our path down :)

We had some fun coming down after as there were dirt tracks and jumps for extreme people haha. We thought we were dangerous running and sliding down them but some people do jumps down them on bikes!! We rejoined path near the road where we had parked and headed off in opposite direction to go for another 3 caches by C/O Bill Teptember , these were The Test That Stumped Them All , The Musical Box and YYZ.  These were all nice caches with effort put in and of course they are named after rock tracks. We completed these and headed back to car park to do 3 drive by's by the same C/O and in the same them.

We bagged 12 caches around Kinver.

We then moved on to Bell's Mill by FungimanForager, this was a cache I have been to twice before but it wasn't there both times. This time it had been moved and was a lot easier than it was originally.

We then did 2 more caches further on together before we parted ways for the day. Yet another great day and reason why Geocaching is great.

Total caches for day = 15.

Skating on thin ice

Today my wife and son were off Ice Skating at the Silver Blades near Cannock and I saw it as an opportunity to go and do a bit of caching. Andy (Citrus-Lizard) and Bob (G6LPB) were at a loose end and decided to  meet up with me on car park and do some local caches together.

Who Bombed Our Card Game by baggiewhite

http://coord.info/GC3358X

A series of 5 caches in which we combined with another series by PazaUK. The area is totally new to me as I had only completed one series in the area before today. The three of us had some great fun and plenty of geochat along the way.
We parked up near this one and walked in a loop.

B2N: Newlands by PazaUK

B2N = Back To Nature

A series of 6 caches (1 being the bonus) placed along Newlands Lane which which was the subject of a Gating Order due to 'anti-social behaviour' and was closed to traffic only as recently as 2008. See how Mother Nature is not only reclaiming the Lane but also the caches too!

Taken from cache page.

It was great to see how the area is returning back to nature, such a shame other areas don't.
We bagged 11/11 smilies on these 2 series.

We then returned to car and said goodbye to Bob, while Andy and myself bagged a couple of solved puzzles and then he took me to bag 3 by the skating place, We then jumped in car once more before he dropped me off at McDonalds to grab final smiley of day and to meet back up with my wife and son.
Another great time Geocaching.

Total caches for day = 17.

TnT in Swindon area

Today had been planned for a couple of weeks now but due to some unfortunate new Lou (thehorde) had to pull out :(. So at 6.10am myself, Andy (Citrus-Lizard) and Shan (the Griswalds n dogs) left my house and we picked up Julia (the Bedfords) on the way.
We did one drive by on the way and as we parked up to do it the car temperature gauge ready -13 doh.

A shot from GZ of first cache of day!

Bagged our first cache of the day!

We moved on and made our way to our first planned cache of the day, which was Aragog's Lair . It was a D2.5/T4.5 which a couple of us needed towards our D/T grid. The only difficult thing regarding the cache was jumping over a narrow stream.

We did 4 drive by's on the way to the highlight of the day Cold War Cache....

Cold War Cache by mailboxmonty

http://coord.info/GC1782Z

I had this cache bookmarked for quite a while now and over the last couple of weeks we have all been planning a day down here. We parked up very close and GZ was within a stones throw.
We were all very excited and I personally was a little nervous too, but I needn't have been as it was quite spacious down inside the bunker. The cache itself was an easy find.
This really was a fabulous experience and highly recommended.
The cache.
Shan liked going down!

Mission complete!

We moved the car a short distance for the first series of the day.

The Quest for The Blowing Stone by The K9 Crew

http://coord.info/GC2WFRC

A series of 23 smilies with 1 of them being the bonus, where you need to take info from the lids of other caches in the series. The walk is approxiamately 5 miles long with mixed terrain. There are a few uphill bits to the walk but nothing too strenuous. There is one other cache on the route but this was disabled at the time.
There is parking for 3 or 4 cars near the first cache.

Lovely snow :)

We really enjoyed this series and had lots of fun along the way, we even had a break and made snow angels at side of one of the fields.
We collected all the numbers needed and it was great as they were repeated incase you couldn't find all the caches. We failed on one but have since discovered that it wasn't there. :(

At cache 22 we worked out coords for bonus and I then drove us all to somewhere that we knew was wrong. I had made an error in calculations but thankfully Shan had photos of them all and they took us to GZ and the stone.

The cache was a nice big one to finish off with, we then took some pics of us blowing the stone.

Shan doing Badger dance!

You can just tell, we'll be mates forever :)

Julia blowing the stone!

We bagged 22 of the 23 caches on offer :)

We got back to the car where we all had a bit to eat and Julia made us a coffee, I love how organised she always is :) Next on the list is another single cache, a multi named Splash and dash.

Splash and Dash by williewandering

http://coord.info/GC2XR9M

We parked up close to this one and were all smiling as we could see a bit of what was ahead for us, there was a medium sized pond with large rock type platforms running down the side of it....but they had gaps to jump over and one had eroded a lot so needed to walk across it or don wellies and wade through the water.

I managed to get over by balancing and Julia returned in her wellies, but it was Shan who found the well hidden stage one. We entered the coords for stage two and realised it was back and on dry land.

At GZ Andy made a quick find but we let Julia carry on searching for a while haha.

We really enjoyed this cache that had been recommended to me before we got here.

Job done!

We got back in the car all dry and then proceeded to bag 13 cache and dashes on the way to what was to be our final series of the day. After the last cache and dash and close to where we needed to be for the parking on the series we hit black ice on the road and slid towards another car that was sliding towards us. I managed to take foot of brakes and hit some deeper snow off the road which enabled me to brake and come to a halt phew!!!!
However we were now stuck and couldn't get car out. Thankfully Shan took to the wheel and we all pushed along with 3 - 4 other people. Thankfully that was enough to get us out so that we could turn around and go back the way we came to find somewhere else to park. It was a big diversion but thankfully we managed to get there in one piece.

The Chocolate Series by Cache and Cake Club

http://coord.info/GC2YAWH

The Chocolate Series  is a walk of 23 caches over a distance of  4 miles.
The series begins up on Hendred Down where there is ample free parking. The circular walk takes you over the Downs towards ‘Lands End’ then back up via the Isley Downs Riding Route where you will get some amazing views. The return stretch takes in Scutchamers Knob, here you will find an existing cache. Scutchamers Knob is an early Iron Age round barrow. If you are interested in Trig Points, then you will pass Fore Down pillar (S5826) just near Scutchamers. A memorial stone to Penelope Betjeman is the location for cache 17, the stone has been placed at an excellent view point.

We couldn't get to park where series begins due to ice on the roads going upto it, so we parked very close to cache 9. The series got off to a bad start as we couldn't find this one :( but we were soon celebrating as we found the next. The area around here really is fantastic with stunning views everywhere you look, it is very popular with walkers!

Stunning, everywhere we looked.

All the rest of the caches were very easy to find and lots were hidden at the bases of posts, however don't let it deter you as the walk really is fantastic.

We had another look at number 9 on return but still no joy, so we decided to move on.
Once at car we realised that unfortunately some low-lifes had broke into our car and stole Andy & Shan's rucksacks. It was on noticing this that the rest of the caches planned came to an end.

We bagged 23 out of a possible 24 smilies :).

I had to get in touch with my wife to let her know what had happened as where she works you have to follow set procedures when such an occurance happens, but none of us on 3 different networks could get a signal doh. I drove on and eventually Kate got through on Andy's phone.
I then reported the crime and we discussed maybe bagging a couple more smilies at the nearby services.... and so we did.

Well what a totally awesome day we had. It was very cold but glorious Sunshine all day, some great views, great caches and the greatest in company. :) :) :)

Todays haul was 68 smilies with 2 DNF's
